Heading West

Not too much to say this morning other than we are heading out as soon as we can tie up the loose ends.

Things went very smoothly with the movers.  The car was picked up late mid-afternoon by the transporter.  We spent the night here sleeping on aerobeds and have just our necessities to get packed up and a little bit of final cleaning.  My good friend came over and vacuumed all of the carpet yesterday which was huge help – she also cooked us dinner the night before and is bringing me coffee later this morning since my coffeepot is gone and there is no Bread Co. in the middle of Lincoln County!

Last night during dinner, we were planning how we can pull our little red wagon to the grocery store since we will be able to access it from a walking trail by our new house.  There is also a Walgreen’s, a McDonald’s Playplace…

We’re excited!  Now all we have to do is head west on I-70 for about 800 miles!

Random Happenings

We were at Co-op all day yesterday while the movers  did their magic and finished packing our house.  They were heading out for the day when I got home and we chatted in the garage for a few minutes before they left.  Meanwhile, Hannah was inside poking around checking out all of the stacks of boxes.  When I came in the house, she said, “we could make an  awesome fort with all these boxes!”  She was standing by the boxes marked “milk glass” which are my antique treasure that were passed down to me from my grandma and my mom.  I discouraged her.

I told Ryan about her comment this morning, he grinned and said, “you know, I had the same thought…”

Who knows with those two…

We told stories in the dark before bedtime with flashlights since all the lamps are packed up.  Hannah tried to make hers spooky, but she is just not a spooky sort of girl.

I realized in the middle of the day at Co-op that I forgot to set out the dog’s (newly purchased) harnesses and leashes.  There was nothing I could do but wait until I got home to see if I could find them.

I checked the laundry room where I kept them and the very top box was marked “leashes.”  I have been worried about finding things on the other end since I didn’t pack the boxes, have no sense of their “system” and the boxes are rather vaguely marked.  I was as pleased as punch that I didn’t have to sort through a ton of boxes after a busy day of co-op.

Ryan and I both had our moments of sadness in watching our home turn back into a shell of a house.  I couldn’t watch them pack up the green living room and was even reluctant to look at it once the walls were blank and the glass shelves in the built-ins were empty.  My Dad and I built those built-ins…

The movers put plastic carpet protector down first thing when they arrived.  In some places it bubbles up and and makes a popping sound when you walk on it.  It is a pretty heavy plastic and popping the bubbles doesn’t break the plastic.  After making this discovery, you can imagine the fun that Ellie Grace had walking up and down the hallway.  Muffy got in on the action too.  Too bad it was past bedtime and we knew she was out of bed…

And I was worried they couldn’t keep busy without their toys….boxes for forts, flashlights, bubbles…This place is a regular playhouse.  You should have seen the “jungle gym” I had to climb to close the windows last night!

Ready?

The thought hit me today while waiting at Hannah’s eye doctor appointment (we were there two hours – only saw the doc 15 minutes, plus it was a one hour drive each way and, gee, since we were so close we went early and spent the morning at the Science Center).

It is impossible to be really ready for the movers…It’s like having everything lined out to unleash complete havoc on your entire household.

So, I am going to bed early.

(BTW — she got a clean bill of health on her eyes with a good alignment and acuity.  No patching, no follow-ups, only a check-up in a year.  That’s the best news I’ve heard in awhile!)

A Contest

Hannah said out of the blue the other day that she would probably win if she were to ever enter “The Slowest Eater” contest.  Her wheels were turning considering this concept…

I’m not sure where she came up with that one, but, come on, the kid knows the meaning of “savor”.  That is one of my favorite things about her – her ability to savor life.

So Long, Yellow House

I want to thank you for keeping us warm so many winter nights.

I want to thank you for keeping us dry during many a summer rain.

We brought our Ellie Grace home to you.  We yearned for your safety and familiarity from the other side of the earth.  We told her we were bringing her home.  You showed her that this house was home finally for my sweet little one.  She has slept peacefully in her tiny bed in her light yellow room.  Thank you for sweet dreams.

Hannah has dressed up, constructed forts, welcomed many friends in the name of play inside your tall walls.  Countless times, I have heard her voice echo down the hall from her room as she mimicked the voices of her Little People, then her Polly’s and now even her Barbie’s.  She has learned here, read here, grown here.  Thank you for her time to play and grow.

We have worked here, welcomed here, and worried here.  We have planned, dreamed, and gazed out your windows.  Seasons have been evident here: the howling north wind, the green hills in summer, the geese flying over head when they return to nest every year.  This place has been a safe haven to relax, rest, and recooperate from that big world out there.

Thank you, Yellow House for standing tall and strong around this little family.
